January 2006 Newsletter Part One

I received quite a few questions and comments on the December topic of “Accomplishing Goals by Not Doing.” I decided to devote this newsletter to discussing an issue that came up fairly regularly in those responses.
There is also information on the upcoming Medical Qigong workshop and information about a public lecture that I am doing in Larkspur later this month.

On Not Comparing Oneself with Others

To quote from the last newsletter in December:
“The key idea with this is that if we devote our energy and effort to excelling at the process of what we are doing, the end results will take care of themselves. By easing into the natural movement of the process we can let go of the result, and in doing so, accomplish our goals without thinking about them.”

I have heard from several people recently who independently mentioned that they were doing quite well applying this until they started comparing themselves with someone else. In other words they could stay focused as long as they internally followed the process, but when they started to compare themselves with someone else their focus fell apart.

The solution is relatively simple:
DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHER PEOPLE.

Every person has different strengths and abilities. A task (be it painting, accounting, running, solving business problems, etc.) that may be easy for one person might be very difficult for someone else. But it doesn’t matter, because we each bring different strengths that are necessary for the health of our society. Furthermore, we can develop our own abilities in a way that is authentic to us, and in doing so excel at what we do.

It is healthy to take inspiration from those who have excelled at something. However, if we mistakenly see someone else’s strength as evidence of our own shortcomings, we may feel discouraged instead of inspired.

Say, for example, that your goal was to make your body stronger and healthier. It may be that someone you talked to said that they could do 500 pushups. You may say to yourself, “I could never do that.” So how does that affect your goal? Not at all. If you exercised a small amount every day, entering into the process and seeing where it carried you, I guarantee that you would become progressively stronger in a relatively short time, in a way that was suited totally to you.

What someone else can or can’t do is not relevant to accomplishing your goals - what you do is. Trust yourself and let the results take care of themselves.
